Asian and Pacific Islander Artist Presenting Initiative
The JACCC launched the Asian and Pacific Islander Artist Presenting Initiative (API/2) in the Fall 2003 to support the creative process of API performing and visual artists who are developing work for presentation to the public.
With initial three-year funding from The James Irvine Foundation, the goal of API/2 is to strengthen the artistic capacity of exemplary Asian and Pacific Islander artists, and to deepen public understanding and appreciation of API arts and cultural heritage.
To support these goals, the API/2 program will provide access to support mechanisms that are often not available to these working artists, such as rehearsal and studio space, production equipment, technical staff support, marketing and development of interpretive materials that help to deepen their connection to audiences, and networking opportunities.
Categories of Assistance
The API/2 program offers three categories of assistance to eligible artists, to support their creative work process:
1) Incubation of Work and Artistic Capacity-Building
Providing access to resources, including space, staff, equipment, or mentors to finish or refine artistic work for public presentation. This may also include modest cash subsidies to pay for negotiated out-of-pocket artist expenses.
2) Connection to Audiences
Providing marketing and interpretive materials to expand audiences for API artists and work, and to deepen public understanding of API cultures. This may include production of marketing brochures, public relations materials, as well as workshops, lecture/demonstrations, or open rehearsals.
3) Networking and Partnership
Developing convening and networking opportunities for API/2 artists in order to strengthen relationships within this community, and provide opportunities for future partnerships and collaboration.
