2003 Taiko Conference

Taiko: My Life
By Lesley Handa

For three years I have worked at the JACCC on taiko related projects; the1999-2001 Summer Taiko Institutes and the 1999 and 2001 Taiko Conferences. Looking back, I can proudly say that my involvement in these projects have rewarded me with an interesting array of experiences,
taken me places I had never been before and most of all given me the opportunity to meet wonderful people who also share the same passion I have for taiko. Throughout these years, the JACCC and Little Tokyo has become my home away from home, and all of you in the taiko
community have become an extension to my family. It is comforting to know that wherever I travel, I can always feel at home if I visit the taiko group in the area. I thank all of you who have shaped my definition of taiko through this amazing taiko experience over the past three years, into
that which goes far beyond the concept that taiko is playing a barrel tacked with a cowhide.

Lesley Handa was the Assistant Coordinator for the 2001 Taiko Conference, which took place at the JACCC from June 29 - July 1, 2001. She is currently an Event Coordinator for the Building Industry Association of Southern California, in the Building Industry Show Division.
