Inspired by Yoshitomo Nara

JACCC invites you to join us, in collaboration with LACMA, as Sonoko Sakai creates her famous chirashi-zushi, a childhood favorite inspired by artist, Yoshitomo Nara.

Yoshitomo Nara is among the most beloved Japanese artists of his generation. Spanning over 30 years from 1987 to 2020, LACMA’s current Yoshitomo Nara exhibition views the artist’s work through the lens of his longtime passion - music.

This digital culinary class is offered by LACMA at no cost to all participants - please reserve your spot below!

Cooking with LACMA: Chirashi Zushi Inspired by Yoshitomo Nara

Cooking with LACMA invites chefs and culinary historians to teach recipes inspired by artworks at the museum. This quarter we partner with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art to present a cooking demonstration with Sonoko Sakai, author of award-winning cookbook Japanese Home Cooking. Learn how to make chirashi zushi (scattered sushi) and explore the theme of childhood in the exhibition Yoshitomo Nara.

This program starts with an introduction of Yoshitomo Nara's artworks that are related to memories of youth, presented by art historian Yeewan Koon. Then Sakai will teach how to make chirashi zushi, a popular dish created with seasonal ingredients, to celebrate Japan's Children's Day in May. Sakai will explain the layering of multiple ingredients and flavors that makes this rice-based dish a favorite in Japan, and share her own fond childhood memories of chirashi zushi.

Presented in partnership with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
